March 21, 2026

Every year on March 21st (3/21), we recognize World Down Syndrome Day. This date was chosen to represent the third copy of chromosome 21, which is characteristic of Down syndrome. It is a day rooted in awareness, advocacy, and celebration. In speech therapy, we are reminded daily how powerful communication is, and how deeply every individual deserves to be heard, understood, and included.

More than 22,000 individuals are living with Down syndrome in Canada. Since 2012, World Down Syndrome Day has been officially recognized by the United Nations, reinforcing a global call for inclusion, accessibility, and equal rights.

In Canada, the Canadian Down Syndrome Society continues to advocate for “full-life support” which promotes equitable access to education, employment, healthcare, housing, and meaningful participation in community life.

The 2026 theme for World Down Syndrome Day focuses on the problem of loneliness. Loneliness is not just a passing feeling, it can significantly impact health, well-being, and overall quality of life. True inclusion is more than physical presence; it is belonging, connection, and being valued. When communities move beyond awareness and actively create space for participation, relationships, and shared experiences, inclusion becomes the answer.

At Lear Communication, we take a strength-based, person-first, and total communication approach to speech and language therapy. We have the privilege of watching confidence grow when a child or adult shares their ideas, joins a conversation, or advocates for what they need.

One joyful way to participate is by joining the global “Lots of Socks” campaign led by Down Syndrome International. Wearing bright, mismatched socks on March 21st is a simple way to spark conversation and celebrate diversity.

This March 21st, we invite our community to celebrate abilities, promote belonging, and continue building a Canada where individuals with Down syndrome are valued, connected, and empowered across the lifespan. Real inclusion happens when we choose it every day.
